Halloween Movies: “Dracula”

First of all, this is my sixtieth blog entry! Hooray!

Anyway…

When I wrote about The Monster Squad, I made it very clear just how much I love the Universal Monster franchise. It’s amazing to me that one studio was responsible for bringing so many iconic monsters to the big screen.

So, of course, no series of entries on Halloween movies that I write would be complete without one of the original Universal Monster movies rearing its head.

Grab your crosses and stakes and put on your turtlenecks, because we’re about to face…

Dracula (1931)!

I do not own any of the following images or videos!

Here’s the trailer…

I first saw Dracula on Svengoolie, and boy, was I excited to see it! (I’m always excited for Svengoolie, but that’s beside the point.)

If you want to see the film, you have a couple of options: Sven recently showed it again (with a new score), and it will rerun Saturday, October 31, on WCIU. Also, Turner Classic Movies is showing it in theaters on Wednesday, October 28, in a double feature with the Spanish-language version of the movie (with English subtitles), which was filmed at night with a different cast and crew using the same sets. I went to the double feature on Sunday, and I loved seeing all the similarities and differences between the two films.

Here’s the basic, spoiler-free rundown…

Dracula (1931)
Plot: Mr. Renfield travels to Transylvania to close a real estate deal with Count Dracula, who plans to move to London, but all is not as it seems…
Villain(s): Really?
Scare Factor: The scares are very different from what you’re used to seeing in horror films, so it’s hard to predict how scary you or any kids you know may find this one.
Gore Factor: You see blood once in the entire film.
Family-Friendly Factor: There’s no swearing, and any minimal suggestive content that adults may infer will go way over kids’ heads.

“Jammin’ with Jamie” Theme: “Jamie’s Favorite Jams (Part 2)”!

Hi, everyone!

Our final Jammin’ with Jamie jam session is this Saturday, June 13, from 6:00 to 9:00 am!

Well… here we are.

From the instant I found out I was going to be on the air for the first time in October 2011––– before the show was even called Jammin’ with Jamie––– I knew the show would have an end date.

I expected the end date to be “as soon as someone other than my parents heard my voice on an audio-only medium.”

I had to re-apply for my slot three times a year, so for a while, there was also the possibility that someone else would get the slot.

But at this point, I’m moving on to a new chapter in my life. I’m filled with that trademark mix of excitement and worry that comes every time you embark on a new start––– something I always encourage you Jammers to do on my show, making sure I always give you the proper motivational melodies to get stuck in your head and give you that extra push when you need it.

I want to assure all of you: the last time I sign off of Jammin’ with Jamie isn’t the last you’ll hear from me. In fact, it’s just the beginning. Make sure you keep checking this website, my Twitter, and my YouTube account, and we can keep up with each other’s adventures together!

So with that, I give you our final Jammin’ with Jamie jam session theme. Are you ready?

Let’s jam!

“Jammin’ with Jamie” Theme: “Travel Tunes”!

Hi, everyone!

Jammin’ with Jamie will be two hours this week! We’ll be jammin’ from 6:00 to 8:00 am!

In case you missed my announcement last week, after four amazing years, Jammin’ with Jamie is, unfortunately, coming to an end. Including this week, we have three precious jam sessions left together.

Our final Jammin’ with Jamie jam session will be Saturday, June 13.

As for this week’s theme…

For students and everyone else involved in education, the school year is coming to an end, if it hasn’t already. It’s the time when everyone scatters to go home, go on vacation, move someplace new, or even just explore a different part of town.

Whether you know where you’re headed this summer or not, jam with us as we go on a musical road trip through a set of…

Where are you going with this?

“Jammin’ with Jamie” Theme: “Tax Tunes”!

Hi, everyone!

So many Jammin’ with Jamie traditions, so little time! And time is money!

Which reminds me… to remind you that income taxes are due April 15.

… I’ll wait until you’ve stopped hyperventilating…

Welcome back!

This week, as you fill out all those forms and crunch all those numbers––– or as you put them off just a little longer––– turn us on and jam with us to…

I hit the jackpot!

“Jammin’ with Jamie” Theme: “Spring Songs”!

Hi, everyone!

Have you noticed something… different outside? Maybe you’ve noticed that you can now see the grass where there was once snow. Maybe you’ve noticed that there are more animals roaming around. Maybe you absentmindedly bundled up for sub-zero temperatures and a wicked wind chill recently, only to go outside and immediately regret your decision as you start sweating, which only gets worse as you look around and see that everyone else had the foresight to actually check the forecast before instinctively suiting up.

… That last one happened to a friend.

Now in the Midwest, particularly in the Chicagoland area, we know to never take non-extreme weather for granted, because tomorrow could bring a blizzard, thunderstorm, heat wave, or any other manner of dangerous weather, during which we’ll no doubt continue to go about our daily lives, anyway. Frankly, a real-life “sharknado” wouldn’t shake us.

So, in the spirit of enjoying the weather before it blows over––– literally––– this week, we’re going to jam to…

These breaks before the theme announcement warm my heart!

“Jammin’ with Jamie” Theme: “Sidesplitting Love Songs”!

Hi, everyone!

Today is Friday the 13th, and tomorrow is Valentine’s Day. So for some people, this year, they’ll have two days of bad luck!

Cue the rimshot!

Whether you love Valentine’s Day or hate it, you’re going to want to be jammin’ with us this week!

Get ready to laugh your heart out, as we jam to…

I love this already!

“Jammin’ with Jamie” Theme: “Santa Songs (Holidays 2014: Part 2)”!

Hi, everyone!

We’re continuing on with our holiday-themed jam sessions! Last week, we focused on getting ourselves into the spirit of the holiday season.

This week, we’re going to catch the next reindeer flight to the North Pole with our own sack stuffed full of…

Come on! I need to know what to pack!

“Jammin’ with Jamie” Theme: “Wishing You Happy Holidays… Harmonies (Holidays 2014: Part 1)”!

Hi, everyone!

I hope all of you Jammers out there had a very Happy Thanksgiving with loved ones!

All right, it’s officially after Thanksgiving, so now, I can finally open the floodgates and unleash my personal avalanche of tunes that I love jammin’ to this time of year!

So starting now, I am officially…

… What? … WHAT?!

“Jammin’ with Jamie” Theme: “Haunting Horror Host Harmonies! (Halloween 2014: Part 4)”!

Hi, everyone!

It turns out I misread WNUR’s schedule, so we actually have one more Halloween-themed jam session to squeeze into the spooky season!

On October 10, Rich Koz (a.k.a. “Svengoolie”) was honored for his thirty-five years as Svengoolie (formerly “Son of Svengoolie”) at the Museum of Broadcast Communications (Museum.tv) in Chicago. It was an amazing event, and I highly encourage all of you to go to the MBC and check out all of the great exhibits they have there––– including, of course, the brand new Svengoolie exhibit that was unveiled that night! The exhibit includes his original coffin that was also used by Jerry G. Bishop, the original Svengoolie.

Mr. Goolie himself (and me) at the MBC! It’s always great to see you, Sven!

Also, October 31, 2014 has been declared “Svengoolie/Rich Koz” day in both the city of Chicago and the state of Illinois in his honor. Congratulations, Rich Koz! You certainly deserve it!

Of course, in case anyone hasn’t heard yet, the Queen of Halloween herself, Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, is hosting a brand new series on Hulu (Hulu.com), entitled, 13 Nights of Elvira, that I also highly recommend!

So, with all this news about horror movie hosts, what else can we do this week but jam to some…

… Do people in “Berrrwyyyn” get this show?

“Jammin’ with Jamie” Theme: “Terror-ific Trick-or-Treat Tunes! (Halloween 2014: Part 3)”!

Hi, everyone!

Well, the bad news is, we’re wrapping up our month-long theme of Halloween harmonies to haunt our heads and really get us into the spirit of the spooky season.

… The good news is, we have a fearfully fun jam session to wrap it all up as tightly as a mummy!

Last week, we jammed to songs about both the supernatural and the sci-fi sides of Halloween.

This week, we’re so close to the actual holiday, we’re just going to dive into our bag of tasty tunes to dig out some…

I got a “rock”… Get it? “Rock,” like “rock music”? Never mind…
